Jews’ Next Dor Shabbat (Part of the Shabbat Hop Series)

Posted by challahbackgirl on February 29, 2012

When: 9:30am-1:30pm, Saturday, May 5, 2012

Where: Congregation Beth David, 19700 Prospect Road, Saratoga CA

Looking for a fun and meaningful way to share Shabbat with other young adults? Join Jews’ Next Dor for this month’s Shabbat Hop: Jews’ Next Dor Shabbat at Congregation Beth David. Fellow young adults will be leading a participatory Saturday morning service (see below for how you can get involved in the action) followed by a delicious Kiddush lunch complete with schmoozing and desserts.

Shabbat Hop is a collaborative effort of local synagogues and Jewish communal organizations, where a monthly young adult Shabbat experience “hops” from one synagogue to another. Jews’ Next Dor Shabbat, where young adults lead the entire service, is an annual tradition; this year, we are excited to join Shabbat Hop and invite the entire young adult community to join in the festivities.
At Congregation Beth David, egalitarian worship begins at 9:30am; we encourage you to join us then, but you of course are welcome any time. Most of the service is in Hebrew, but transliterated prayer books are available. Males are required to wear a kippah; you can bring your own or borrow one from the synagogue.

Congregation Beth David is located at 19700 Prospect Road, Saratoga, CA 95070; visit them online at http://beth-david.org/. We’re looking forward to seeing you there. If you have any questions related to Jews’ Next Dor or this event, please contact JewsNextDor@beth-david.org. The next Shabbat Hop will occur on June 8 at 6:15pm at Congregation Beth Am.

**********
In order for us to fulfill our goal of an entirely young adult-led Shabbat service, we need your help! The following honors in the worship service are available; please contact JewsNextDor@beth-david.org if you’re interested in any of these:

  • Prayer for Israel (1 person)
  • Prayer for Peace (English, 1 person)

Anyone performing any of these honors must wear a kippah and a tallit. You can bring your own or borrow from the synagogue. Your peers are here to help you if you’d like to brush up or learn something new. Join Congregation Beth David any Saturday morning to get familiar with the service. Look for fellow young adults on the 4th Saturday of the month in a back row. Stay after lunch for Wisdom and Witdom with Doug Brook.

Jews’ Next Dor Shabbat needs a few other volunteers including shoppers and bakers in advance. We look forward to you contacting JewsNextDor@beth-david.org to volunteer or for more information.

USCJ is excited to have the opportunity to reach out to our Young Adult population, ages 22-26, for the first time by partnering with The Israel Experience Ltd. to offer a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip in the summer of 2012.Taglit-Birthright Israel provides the gift of first time, peer group, educational trips to Israel for Jewish young adults ages 18 to 26. The USCJ Connect-1 trip is specifically crafted to reach our young adults in a Conservative movement framework, highlighting some of the many wonderful resources we have in Israel and how we are at the forefront of religious pluralism in Israel.  Because this is a Birthright Israel trip, it is not structured like our high school programs, including the ritual aspects.  Connect 1 will not include any required prayer services with the exception of Shabbat.  This is a unique opportunity to reach those young adults who have not yet been to Israel on a peer experience, and specifically, by doing so in a Conservative movement framework.

We are currently collecting names of potential applicants at:

http://taglit.theisraelexperience.org/referral-uscj/

Refer someone and you will be entered in the raffle to win one of the prizes listed above.  The more referrals, the greater the chances!

Our volunteer meetings are your ticket to the inside scoop of what’s coming up, and your chance to give back to the Jews’ Next Dor community as part of our volunteer team. No time commitment is too small or too big to help shape your community.

We always love for you to share your talents and ideas with us as we look ahead at our calendar of events. Whether you’re interested in learning more about volunteering with us, want a sneak peak of our upcoming events, have a cool and unique event idea, or are eager to lend a hand, our volunteer meeting is for you. Learn about the tools and support for all of our volunteers.

To keep our community alive, vibrant, and the best it can be, we truly depend on you, our passionate and dedicated volunteers. Whether you like to write, talk on the phone, schmooze, shop, bake, make reservations, search online, post status messages, help with setup or clean-up, chant from the torah, go hiking, or so much more, we’ve got ways of volunteering that are right for you. Do you remember your first Jews’ Next Dor event, and how special it was? Many different types of volunteering were required to make that happen. With your help, we can recreate that experience for the next cohort of young adults in the Bay Area.

Even if you’re unable to attend our volunteer meeting, we’d love for your help and continued participation; you can reach us at JewsNextDor@beth-david.org with your ideas, questions, feedback, and how you’d like to help our community.

Jews’ Next Dor is entirely volunteer run — every event you have enjoyed before was made possible by someone like you stepping up and making it happen. Bring your ideas and your energy! Volunteer meetings are open to all Jewish 20 and 30 somethings!
