New Member Meet & Greet

Posted by challahbackgirl on April 23, 2012

When: 7pm-10pm, Wednesday, May 2, 2012

Where: Jerusalem grill & bar, 1740 South Winchester Blvd., Campbell, CA 07020

Are you a Jewish young adult (20 or 30 something) who just moved into the area, and looking for company? Did you recently graduate from a local University, and are wondering where you can find fun Jewish social events without Hillel? Or maybe you’ve heard of the amazing Jewish young adult group called Jews’ Next Dor, but have been waiting for a good opportunity to make an impressive first entrance at one of our popular events. If you answered ‘Yes!’ to any of these questions, your opportunity has just arrived!

Jews’ Next Dor is hosting our first ‘New Member Meet & Greet’ on Wednesday, May 2nd at the Jerusalem Bar & Grill in Campbell. The Jerusalem Grill & Bar is a glatt kosher establishment with very delicious meat and vegetarian dishes. This event is intended specifically for Jewish young adults (20 and 30 somethings) who have attended Five or fewer Jews’ Next Dor events in the last 6 months.

Singles, couples, and any level of Jewish observances are all welcome! At this easygoing Meet & Greet, you will enjoy delicious food, chat with other Jewish young adults who are new to the group, and meet the group’s Steering Committee who make these events and many more happen.

And, as has been the case for several months now, you get all this for the low, low price of $10, thanks to a generous grant from the Young Adult Department of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. So come hungry and ready to meet (and greet!) other new members of Jews’ Next Dor!

Jews’ Next Dor is an active community of Jewish 20 and 30 somethings centered in the South Bay. If you have any questions about our group or this event, please contact JewsNextDor@beth-david.org with any questions.

This event was organized by Kristin S., a Jews’ Next Dor volunteer.

Election for Jews’ Next Dor Steering Committee

Posted by challahbackgirl on April 18, 2012

When: 8:00pm – 10:00pm, Thursday, June 7, 2012

Where: Private Home in Cupertino, RSVP for Address to JewsNextDor@beth-david.org

Jews’ Next Dor plans over 100 events each year because of the amazing volunteers, like you, who step up to lend a hand. As our group continues to grow, we have instituted an official leadership structure to give us the additional coordination we need to run smoothly. Our first two Steering Committees were smashing successes, and now it is time to elect our next leaders who will serve from July to December. So, we need you: to participate, to volunteer, to vote, and to lead. The election is Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 8pm at a private home in Cupertino. Please make the time to join us and have your voice represented in the future of the group. We know there’s a lot of information here so please don’t hesitate to contact us at JewsNextDor@beth-david.org for anything elections or Jews’ Next Dor related.

- -> Voter Eligibility

Any Jewish young adult (20-39) who attended 3 or more Jews’ Next Dor events since June 7, 2011 is eligible to vote. You must be present to vote. A minimum of 10 eligible voters is required.

- -> What is the Steering Committee?

The Steering Committee oversees the vision of the group and sets our policies. They also appoint sub-committees to do the daily work of our organization (planning and publicizing events, managing our finances, etc.), and oversee those committees throughout the term. There are 7 spots on the committee; all 7 are elected every 6 months.

- -> Steering Committee Eligibility

Any Jewish young adult (20-39) who attended 5 or more Jews’ Next Dor events between May 31, 2011 and May 31, 2012 is eligible to serve on the Steering Committee. We encourage all candidates to be present at the election, but this is not strictly required.

- -> What’s Required of Steering Committee Members?

Each member of the Steering Committee will take on a significant role in our organization, to be specified as a group at a mandatory new-leader orientation, to be held on the morning of June 10, 2012. Each member should be able to allocate a minimum of 2 hours per week to committee work and meetings, outside of attending or planning individual Jews’ Next Dor events. Additionally, Steering Committee members are expected to attend an average of two Jews’ Next Dor events per month. Steering Committee members will serve a six-month term, from July to December, plus remain available to advise the next Steering Committee during the month of January.

- -> How to Submit Candidacy

To submit your candidacy, you must e-mail JewsNextDor@beth-david.org by May 24, 2012 with: your full name; a professional-looking headshot; a description of the area(s) in which you are most interested in working; e-mail and phone contact information in case we need to follow up with you; and whether you’re a member of Congregation Beth David and, if not, whether you would be willing to become one (we’ll explain why below, but this is NOT inherently a requirement for eligibility). If you will not be able to attend the election, you may also submit by June 6, 2012 your two-minute campaign speech (see below for content requirements) in one of the following alternative formats: video recording (one continuous shot of your face with a plain background), audio recording, or text to be read by the election official.

- -> How Elections Work

Nominations can be made from the floor at the beginning of the election. Each candidate will be given two minutes to talk about a) what draws them to Jews’ Next Dor, b) what they are interested in doing for Jews’ Next Dor, c) skills and experience they possess to help serve these interests, and d) their vision for the future of Jews’ Next Dor. After all speeches have been delivered, ballots will be distributed to all eligible voters. Voters will indicate any and all candidates with whom they would be comfortable leading the group (be this number greater than or less than seven). The ballot will also contain space for write-ins. The seven candidates receiving the greatest number of approvals will be elected to the new Steering Committee. (By virtue of being an auxiliary group of Congregation Beth David (CBD), at least one member of the Steering Committee must be a member of the synagogue. This means that if none of the top seven vote-getters expressed at least willingness to be members of CBD, a lower vote-getter will be elected instead of the seventh-place vote-getter. Beth David offers discounted memberships to students, singles, and young adults under age 33, and is sensitive to financial hardship. We are happy to answer any questions about what Beth David membership entails.)

- -> Other Ways to Get Involved

In addition to the Steering Committee, there are other non-voting positions that will need to be filled after the election. These include Recording Secretary and Treasurer (who must be a Beth David member), sub-committee managers and members (for event organizing, marketing and publicizing events, volunteer training, scrapbooking and blogging, just to name a few), and occasional volunteers. Please let us know if you’d be interested in any of these opportunities; we’re happy to have you on board!

We look forward to seeing you at the election. Please RSVP and send any questions to JewsNextDor@beth-david.org.

Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity

Posted by challahbackgirl on April 18, 2012

When: 8:00am – 4:00pm, Sunday, May 20, 2012

Where: Cleo Dr, Cupertino, near highway 85 and De Anza Blvd

Habitat for Humanity transforms families and strengthens communities by partnering with volunteers, the community, and qualified low-income families to build decent, affordable housing for long-term home ownership. The organization serves families who currently live in inadequate housing, are willing to volunteer a minimum of 500 hours of “sweat equity” labor on Habitat homes, and have an ability to pay for their home. Volunteers are an integral part of Habitat’s program, and have helped build 50 homes in Silicon Valley to date.

On May 20, Jews’ Next Dor gets to be a part of the action at a build site in Cupertino. Congregation Beth David, our sponsoring synagogue, is one of several faith communities participating in the building of four new homes in Cupertino on Cleo Dr., near highway 85 and De Anza Blvd. On May 20, Jews’ Next Dor has been invited to fill five of the volunteer slots. The build shift runs from 8:15 AM to 4:00 PM, and no building experience is necessary (Habitat will train you at the beginning of the day). Come join us as we participate in this wonderful mitzvah to increase access to affordable housing in our community.

Due to the limited number of slots, you must RSVP for this event to JewsNextDor@beth-david.org, where you can also direct any questions. RSVPing via Facebook is not sufficient. If we get more than five volunteers, we will administer a waiting list. RSVPs must be received by Wednesday, May 2.
