Shalom, Chaverim! I hope everyone is doing well and is able to find refuge from our crazy June weather. Today is the summer solstice – and the first official day of summer, which means more hours of daylight than any other day on the calendar. 

Also, today is THE DAY!  Jews’ Next Dor is holding its ELECTIONS tonight. Join us as we elect the new steering committee! Exercise your right to VOTE and show your support for your fellow JNDers as they run for the board.  Seven people have submitted their candidacy for the new steering committee, and nominations will be accepted from the floor tonight.  If you are nominating somone or are being nominated, you must be present at the elections for the nomination to be accepted and for the nominee to give their speech and be written onto the ballot. 

Elections begin TONIGHT at 7 pm at a private home in Cupertino. The address has been sent out, but you can still email JewsNextDor@beth-david.org to receive the address. Our board is checking email throughout the day and the address will be emailed out up until the elections commence.  Join us tonight and be part of the future of Jews’ Next Dor.

President’s Message – 6.14.2011 – Elections, Events and Kosher BBQ!

Shalom, Chaverim! Jews’ Next Dor has kicked off its summer with our first pool party of the season – and I think we had 35 people in the hot tub at one point. Thank you to Amir C. for hosting us, and to all who attended.

There is  a lot happening with Jews’ Next Dor this summer, and I hope everyone will join us for our amazing events and support our fabulous volunteers who have stepped up to plan adventures for us.

The first really big event:  Tuesday, June 21 (a week from today), Jews’ Next Dor will be holding ELECTIONS for the next steering committee. The deadline has passed for people to submit their candidacy, but NOMINATIONS WILL BE TAKEN FROM THE FLOOR the night of the elections.  So, if you want to run, or decide someone else should serve on the steering committee, please nominate them. However, people must be present at elections if they are nominating, or will be nominated.  Please RSVP to the invite on Facebook, and the address will be released in a few days. The next BIG event is: the 2nd Annual Jews’ Next Dor Talent Show! Do you sing, act, play a musical instrument, write poetry or short stories, or dance? Then this is the place for you! We are also looking for artists to submit photos, paintings, jewelry and other pieces of art to exhibit and sell at the show.   Not ready to perform or show your art?  We also need people to help with baking, back stage preparations, and other duties.  Please submit your act, your art or if you are willing to volunteer to JewsNextDor@beth-david.org by June 27 so there is enough time to prepare for the show. Sunday, June 26: Join Jews’ Next Dor for another outdoor adventure as we hike Mount Tamalpais in Marin County. Jewish High Tech Community – Noah Alper, founder of Noah’s Bagels

Join the Jewish High Tech Community for “Noah Alper, the founder of Noah’s Bagels: The Road to IPO and Beyond.”  Noah Alper is the founder of Noah’s Bagels. He took the Noah’s Bagels concept from a one-store location in Berkeley California in 1989, and in 6 1/2 years sold the business for 100 million dollars while taking it public. Alper has founded five other businesses besides the bagel empire he built, and brings a wealth of start up and small business expertise to the marketplace.

President’s Message – Monday, June 6, 2011

Shalom, Chaverim! I hope everyone celebrated Israel’s 63rd Birthday in style at Israel in the Gardens in San Francisco yesterday. We had a great line-up of events last week – Bocce Ball and Picnic in the Park; Meet and Greet for Yom Yerushalayim, Shabbat Potluck and Israel in the Gardens. Thank you to all of our amazing organizers and thank you all for coming out to join in the revelry.  

First order of business – Jews’ Next Dor Steering Committee Elections. The deadline to submit your candidacy is TOMORROW – June 7th. You know you wanna run – so send us your stuff. You  need to submit your name, your intent to run, a headshot of you, what interests you in running for the Steering Committee, and are you a member of Congregation Beth David, or would you be willing to join CBD. Send your information to JewsNextDor@beth-david.org. The elections will be held on Tuesday, June 21 at a private home in Cupertino. The list of candidates will be published 5-7 days before the eleciton, and nominations can be taken from the floor.  If you have questions about the Steering Committee, please contact me or one of the other current board members. 

There are more events happening, and I would love to see y’all there. 

Tuesday, June 7: Marks the beginning of Shavuot, the holiday where the Jews received the Torah from God while assembled at Mount Sinai. Shavuot is also a harvest holiday, and it is customary to eat dairy, conduct study sessions and read The Book of Ruth. Congregation Beth David has many Shavuot activities, so please review their website www.beth-david.org for the list of activities. 

Sunday, June 12:  Jews’ Next Dor hits the pool for the beginning of summer pool party. Please bring a vegetarian/dairy snack or beverage to share.  Thursday, June 16:  Join Jews’ Next Dor at Planet Granite in Sunnyvale for a night of indoor rock climbing. Learn how to manage the ropes in a beginner’s belay lesson. After the lesson we will hang out and climb up the walls for a few hours. Event starts at 6 pm. Sunday, June 19:  We are hitting the beach in Santa Cruz! Shalom, Chaverim! I hope everyone is well and has a wonderful upcoming Memorial Weekend.  Jews’ Next Dor has much in store in the upcoming weeks and we would love to have you join us.

Summer is coming, which means it is time for Jews’ Next Dor to transition to a new set of leaders. So, in light of this, we are having ELECTIONS for the new Steering Committee.  Elections will be held on Tuesday, June 21 at 7 pm at a private home in Cupertino.

If you are attending to vote, you must be between the ages of 21-39, and have attended three JND or JND co-sponsored events in the past calendar year.

If you are planning to run for the new steering committee, you must be between the ages of 21-39; have attended five Jews’ Next Dor or JND co-sponsored events in the past calendar year.  You must EMAIL JewsNextDor@beth-david.org declaring your intent to run, submit your areas of interest (ex. Volunteer recruitment, programming,), a professional looking photo and if you are a member of Congregation Beth David, or would be willing to join the synagogue. At least one member of the steering committee must be a CBD member.  Candidates will have two minutes to present at the elections, and nominations will also be taken from the floor. The deadline to submit your candidacy is Tuesday, June 7. The list of candidates will be published 5-7 days before the election.

Falafel to ring in the 63rd Birthday of Israel. Carpools will leave at 10:30 am from the Burger King at Grant Road and El Camino in Mountain View. Attendees will share gas and parking costs with their driver.

Charity Bake Off with Eytz Chaim

Join Congregation Eytz Chaim for a Charity Bake-Off on Sunday, My 15 at 12:30 pm. All proceeds go to support Jewish Family and Children’s Services of the Peninsula. Cost is $10.

Come to the charity bake-off and nosh on cookies, cakes, banana bread and more!  All bake-off attendees will have the opportunity to sample baked goods and decide which ones are the best.  Could it be your cookies or someone else’s? Be there to find out!

Mitzvah on the Rocks..the Lone Soldiers Program

Join Mitzvah on the Rocks and Moishe House Palo Alto for “Mitzvah on the Rocks” on Saturday, May 21 at 9 pm.  All proceeds from this event are going to support the Lone Soldier Program in Israel. This is a community event and all Young Adults (ages 21-45) are invited to attend.

Mitzvah on the Rocks is coming back with a spin! We’ll be partying the night away with an open bar at the Moishe House in Palo Alto.

Join us on Saturday night, May 21st, for a great party to benefit Israeli lone soldiers. Lone soldiers serve in the Israeli Defense Forces without immediate family in Israel to support them. There are approximately 5,000 lone soldiers serving in Israel right now and most of them volunteers from other countries.

100% of proceeds from this event will benefit the Lone Soldier Center in Jerusalem, Israel, which was recently featured in USA Today.

President’s Message – 5.10.2011

Shalom, Chaverim. Spring is here, the flowers are blooming, and the sun is shining. That means more is in store at Jews’ Next Dor.   The board has been spending much time deliberating, preparing and discussing ideas for the next board, and what the future of the organization will look like.  Our events do not happen unless wonderful volunteers – like YOU – step up to plan them, run them and ensure the day to day needs of the group are being met.

That being said, Jews’ Next Dor is seeking candidates to run for the next board.  Exercise your right to run and VOTE at the Jews’ Next Dor ELECTION on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 7 pm at a private home in Cupertino.  In order to vote, you must have attended 3 JND, or JND co-sponsored events in the last year. In order to run for the board, you must have attended 5 JND or JND co-sponsored events in the past year.  If you want more information, or are curious about what a board member does, please ask me or another board member.  You all have talents to contribute to the group, and this is one of many ways of doing so.  More details about the election are coming soon..so Stay Tuned.

President’s Message – 4.28.2011 Upcoming Events

Shalom, Chaverim. I hope everyone is enjoying their chametz after eight days of matzah. Thank you to all who came out last night for our Post Passover Pizza Party and to Adrianna L. for organizing this event.  I cannot believe April is over and May is almost here. This year is going by so fast!

I just want to remind everyone that we have some AMAZING events coming up and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Sunday, May 1: We have a truly wonderful opportunity to have dinner with Holocaust survivors. The next generation will not have this opportunity, and it is our responsibility to pass on the stories and messages, and how they have taken their experiences into their lives. Please join Jews’ Next Dor and Temple Emanu-El’s Chai Society for this event. Monday, May 2:  Lace up your shoes and get ready to rumble as Jews’ Next Dor and Temple Emanu-El team up again for bowling at Homestead Lanes in Cupertino! “The NEW Social Web: Trends and Opportunities”

Join the Jewish High Tech Community (JHTC) for a community event “The NEW Social Web: Trends and Opportunities” on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 6:30 pm. The event is being hosted at Bank Leumi (inside the Four Seasons Hotel) 2000 University Avenue, 1st Floor, East Palo Alto.

At this event, a panel of experts will speak and engage the audience on the growing trend of websites to become “social”.
