Tickets are $9 per person and Parking permits are required everyday. Permits can be purchased in every student lot, price is $2 in coins or dollar bills only. So if you can carpool that is best. The Jewish Theatre San Francisco, The Hub of JCCSF and JIMENA invite you to join us in welcoming New York City’s acclaimed producer and DJ, Diwon. Founder of Shemspeed Records, The Sephardi Music Festival, Modular Moods Records, and the 40 Days and 40 Nights Campus tour, Diwon is revolutionizing classic Mizrahi and Sephardi music by mixing it with banging modern beats. Joining Diwon from New York will be Ephryme, hip-hop artist and activist extraordinaire.

Dan Wolf, Bay Area actor, playwright, hip hop artist, and rising star, will be hosting Diwon and Ephryme as part of Interlude: Four Nights of Entertainment. Interlude comes in the middle of the six-week run of Wolf’s new play, Stateless: A Hip-Hop Vaudeville Experience (which opened to rave reviews and packed houses).

One Community One Book: Rabbi Joseph Telushkin

Rabbi Joseph Telushkin of the Synagogue for the Performing Arts (Los Angeles) speaks on the topic of “Tzedakah is Not Charity.” This FREE event is part of the One Community One Book program, which encourages everyone in Silicon Valley’s Jewish community to read the same book and discuss it. Tzedakah is Not Charity

Joseph Telushkin was named by Talk Magazine as one of the 50 best
speakers in the United States. He was ordained at Yeshiva University in
New York, and pursued graduate studies in Jewish history at Columbia
University. Telushkin is the author of Jewish Literacy: The Most
Important Things to Know About the Jewish Religion, Its People and Its
History, the most widely selling book on Judaism for the past two
decades. His earlier book, Words that Hurt, Words that Heal became the
motivating force behind Senators Joseph Lieberman and Connie Mack’s
1996 Senate Resolution #151 to establish a “National Speak No Evil Day”
throughout the United States. In 2006, he published the first volume of
his monumental work, A Code of Jewish Ethics: You Shall be Holy, a
comprehensive presentation of Jewish teachings on the vital topic of
personal character and integrity. Richard Joel, president of Yeshiva
University, called the book, “a gift to humankind,” and Rabbi David
Wolpe hailed it as “a remarkable guide to goodness.”

  It’s getting chilly outside, but T’KEYA and Jews’ Next Dor are warming things up with a Spicy Havdala Dessert Party. The night starts with cozy havdala goodness and fire, wine, and spices.  You are welcome to bring your own implements of havdaluction.  Our spice boxes can play together.  Potluck dessert and wine party to follow.  Join us!  Please bring chocolate, fruit, a vegetarian dessert of choice, or your favorite kosher wine or spirit.  Please note our host has a cat. Gather with friends, new and old, to unwind at the end of a busy week, and kick-off the week-end in a relaxing way.  We’ll eat, chat, and have some fun.  Dinner will start at 7:30.  Prior to dinner, you are invited to attend services with the Beth Am community, beginning at 6:15. A group of Roots Collective members will be sitting together and would love to have you join us. Rabbi David Forman, a founder of Israel’s Rabbis for Human Rights, will be speaking about the current state of human rights affairs in Israel during the service; in addition, he will speak at 5 PM in the sanctuary on “Can a Jewish State be a Democratic State?”. Saturday, November 14, 7pm – 11pm – Poker Night: Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Fundraiser (Beth Am)

Just when you thought it was safe, Beth Am Men’s Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Fundraiser is back! Roots Collective will be joining Beth Am Men for a night of Texas Hold ‘Em Poker.

This is a fun filled and relaxed adults-only evening of food, drink and camaraderie. Both men and women are welcome. No experience is necessary and beginner instruction will be provided. All proceeds will go to Beth Am’s many tzedakah projects.

The game is no-limit Texas Hold ‘Em. We’ll start at 7 p.m. with check in, a light dinner, drinks, dessert and instruction for those who are learning. The poker itself will start at 7:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $50 in advance or $60 at the door, which includes poker chips, food, adult beverages and fabulous prizes for the top finishers.

*7:30 PM: * A Musical Evening with Rabbi Gershom Sizomu of Uganda

An evening of musical inspiration, beginning with havdallah.

Rabbi Sizomu has a wonderful presence and a unique life as the leader of the
Abayudaya Jews of Uganda. With his guitar, voice and words, he will take us
on a journey of experiencing, learning and understanding more about the
music that has been so important to the Abayudaya (“people of Judah”) Jews.
This music was essential in reviving the community after the reign of Idi
Amin. Some songs will be in Luganda, the local language.

Some Abayudaya items including CDs will be available for purchase. Attendees
will also have the opportunity to make a voluntary donation to the Health
Center now under construction and the other health initiatives now underway
for the Abayudaya and their Christian and Muslim neighbors. These efforts
are being supervised by Rabbi Sizomu with support from Be’Chol Lashon.

Rabbi Sizomu is the first black rabbi from sub-Saharan Africa to be ordained
by an American rabbinic school – the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in
Los Angeles. He returned home in 2008 to continue to lead his Jewish
community and establish a yeshiva. The Abayudaya are a growing 100-year old
community of over 1,000 Jews living among 10,000 Christians and Muslims in
Eastern Ugandan villages. The improved healthcare and community development
provided by the Abayudaya Jews to their neighbors have fostered good will
and cooperation among the communities. Rabbi Sizomu has a unique perspective
on what it means to be a Jew in other parts of the world. He is Senior
Rabbinic Associate at Be’chol Lashon and the Chief Rabbi of Uganda.
