SF AIDS Walk Recap

Posted by jewsnextdor on August 28, 2008

Congratulations Team Jews’ Next Dor and thanks to everyone who sponsored our walkers. As the final totals have been tallied, our team of 31 registered walkers raised $3,754.00. Our team ranked 162th out of 684 teams of varying sizes.

In total More than 25,000 walkers came together to raise a near-record $4,512,934 for the thousands of men, women and children struggling with HIV/AIDS in San Francisco and the entire Bay Area. As we’ve mentioned before, this year’s walk supported a record number of local organizations.

Our walkers had a great time you can see in all the pictures from the event. Click on the link below for multiple albums of pictures. While the weather was a bit icky early in the day, it got to be a nice day and everyone had a great time talking while we walked. Our Stanford and Cal fans event got to enjoy the bands from these schools. Radio stations were out cheering along with playing music, and the Fat Chance Belly Dance Troupe was there again, as we were.

Pictures, more pictures, even more pictures, and yes, more pictures.

AIDS Walk San Francisco on Sunday, July 20!

Lace up your sneakers and walk with us along with 25,000 San Franciscans as we fill Golden Gate Park in support of this important cause. AIDS Walk San Francisco is a 10km (6.2 mile) fundraising walkathon benefiting San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF) in addition to over 50 other AIDS service organizations throughout the six Bay Area counties. Established in 1982, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation is one of the oldest and largest community-based AIDS service organizations in the United States. The mission of the agency is to end the pandemic and the human suffering caused by HIV.

Did you know that…

  • In 2007, a much-heralded HIV vaccine developed by Merck failed to work in a large clinical trial, dealing another serious setback to efforts to stop the AIDS epidemic?
  • In the U.S., between 40,000 to 60,000 people are newly infected with HIV every year?
  • California ranks second in the nation in cumulative AIDS cases, surpassed only by New York?
  • The number of people living with AIDS in California continues to increase. There are over 59,000 Californians living with HIV/AIDS.
