Support the effort to Bring Home Gilad Shalit on Facebook

The World Zionist Organization sends a message to Jews of the Diaspora on how to use Facebook to support Gilad Shalit’s family who are putting pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Olmert to bring Gilad home after almost 1000 days since he was taken captive. t

An important message from Dr. David Breakstone, Head of the Department of Zionist Activities at the World Zionist Organization, and Senior VP for Masorti Olami and MERCAZ Olami:

Somehow it seems that we Jews are never able to completely let go and just enjoy ourselves. Even Purim, the occasion when we come closest to receiving a religious commandment of abandonment, is marred by recollections of suffering past and present. As we read the Megillah this week, we cannot help but be aware that this is already the third year running that Gilad Shalit is not going to have the opportunity to do so. Nor will his parents, relatives and friends be able to experience the real joy of the holiday.

A few days ago, approaching 1000 days of Gilad’s being in captivity, they pitched a tent opposite the Prime Minister’s residence where they are now maintaining a vigil 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in order to put pressure on PM Olmert to bring Gilad home before he leaves office in another several days. They have already been visited by thousands of Israelis who are coming to express their support for the family’s efforts, and to boost their morale in the process.

As an act of solidarity with the Shalit family, the Department for Zionist Activities has set up a Facebook group called: BringHomeGiladShalit and is organizing an “event” that began this afternoon through which  Jews of the Diaspora will be able to visit them as well in a virtual tent that will cover the globe. On Thursday, March 19, if Gilad is not yet home, the staff of the Department will be visiting the Shalit family in person, hoping to be able to let them know that tens of thousands of Jews around the world feel their pain and support their efforts.

  11:15 sharp.              Hike takes off. Don’t be late.

  1pm.                           Alice’s Restaurant, 17288 Skyline Blvd, Woodside. (Rain cancels the hike but not Alice’s.)

  Jews’ Next Dor, the young adult group of Congregation Beth David (Saratoga) and the young adult group of Congregation Kol Emeth (Palo Alto) are going for an 90 minute easy hike and stroll in Wunderlich Park, followed by conversation and beers at Alice’s Restaurant. No, not that Alice’s Restaurant, but just as much fun. Alice’s is the kind of establishment that attracts biker gangs, yuppies, and granola crunchies alike. It’s a biker place with bruschetta on the menu. Wunderlich Park features redwood forest, open meadows, beautiful oaks and madrones. The trail is hilly but not really steep, and we’ll hike at a pace that is mellow, groovy, and conducive to conversation.  Event covers 5 miles, with 600 feet of elevation. Admit it.  You want to get out. The woods are beautiful, and the air smells great. Hiking boots and a bottle of water recommended but sneakers okay.  We’ll have a few extra water bottles in case you forget yours.   Directions: To reach Wunderlich Park, take Woodside Rd. (Hwy 84 West) exit from I-280.  Go 2.7 miles west towards the hills.  Look for the small brown entrance sign on your right. This sign is easy to miss, so note your odometer at I-280. When you get to the parking lot, look for the guy with the clipboard. Parking is free but can be tight, so carpooling is encouraged. After the walk, come for beer, silliness, and good conversation at Alice’s Restaurant, just up the road at the intersection of Hwy 84 and Hwy 35 (Skyline Blvd). • Friday, February 27, 6:30pm, Young Adult Shir Shabbat and Potluck

  It’s time for Young Adult Shir Shabbat, but with a few twists. Shir Shabbat will now be at 6:30pm. Young Adults will have a potluck Shabbat dinner together in room one following the service. Please bring a vegetarian or dairy dish to share. Please note there will be no way for it to be kept warm, or to warm it up. Please include the type of food you’re bringing in your RSVP. Drop off your potluck dish in room 1 then head over to sanctuary to join with the congregation for a lively Shabbat service.  Shir Shabbat is an upbeat and joyous Friday evening service (held every 4th Friday) welcoming in Shabbat, complete with Carlebach melodies, dancing and instruments.   The Kiddush Klub is an informal and unofficial gathering of Jews’ Next Dor on our home turf, Congregation Beth David, on Shabbat mornings.  Some of us come for services, others just for lunch, we’d love for you to join us for either or both. Services begin at 9:30am (you’re welcome to stumble in anytime) Kiddush begins around noon (12pm). Look for us near the back. • Be a Minyanaire
  

  Help with the mitzvah of making a minyan. Come one, come all and join Congregation Beth David every Monday – Thursday evening at 7:00 pm for daily minyan. A minyan is a quorum of at least 10 Jewish adults required for public worship. CBD’s weekday minyan last about 20 minutes. It’s a wonderful tradition that brings comfort to our mourners and gives each of us a daily opportunity to connect with our soul, our community and our God. Jews’ Next Dor is Congregation Beth David’s Young Adult Group. “Dor” means “generation” in Hebrew. We’re an active community of Jewish 20 and 30 somethings centered in the South Bay. We enjoy multiple events each month including celebrating holidays, social action/mitzvahs, education and of course social events around the Bay Area. Our community is comprised of singles and couples and is fully volunteer-lead.

Jews on Ice

(aka Jews’ Next Dor goes Ice Skating)

Join us on the ice or off at Logitech Ice in San Jose,
(1500 S. 10th Street, San Jose, CA 95112, at Alma, next to Municipal Stadium).

$10 (please bring cash) for time and skate rental. Logitech Ice offers both figure skates and hockey skates for rent. Bringing your own skates is welcome. Please arrive on time.

Dress appropriately, socks for in your skates, gloves, layers, etc. Not feeling to stable? Don’t worry some of our more seasoned skaters will help you out. (If you know you’ll be stumbling be prepared to get a little wet.) Or you can join us on the side lines or in Stanley’s Sports Bar overlooking the ice rink.

Today the Oshman Family JCC, aka the Palo Alto JCC, is formerly known as the Albert L. Shultz JCC

As of today, 1-1-09 the Palo Alto JCC (Jewish Community Center) has changed it’s name from being the Albert L. Schultz (ALSJCC) to the Oshman Family (OSJCC). They will be moving into a new facility in the fall of this year.  They’re also now on Facebook. Despite all this fuss with changing their name, they still go by the Palo Alto JCC which is much easier to remember. So check out the Palo Alto, JCC on Facebook. They have two pages, a general group for the Palo Alto JCC and another group just for Young Adult programming. Both Facebook groups have been added to our blogroll.

Saturday is Jews’ Next Dor Shabbat

Spend Shabbat with the CBD community, as Jews’ Next Dor, Congregation Beth David’s Young Adult Group leads Shabbat morning services, and sponsors lunch this week.
