Happy Hanukkah! Click the image to see the full album from Light It Up!
Light It Up! brought Jewish young adults from around the Bay to the Koret Pavillion last night for a (not-yet) Hanukkah Party. We filled a few barrels with food for Feeding America (formerly Second Harvest Food Bank), DJ-Doff rocked the house, as we tore up the dance floor. Thanks to all of our bartenders who kept the drinks flowing. Thanks as well to all the organizations and volunteers who pitched in to help organize, setup and cleanup the event. We’d love to get your feedback, by either filling out this Word document (save it with your comments) and send it to JewsNextDor[at]gmail.com as an attachement or by submitting this PDF form online to us (just hit the send e-mail button).
This past year the San Jose Jewish Film Festival became the Silicon Valley Film Festival, which we already let you know. We’ve been going to the film festival for the past few years as a group, and this year, the new name isn’t stopping us, after all we got a new name too! We’re going to see a movie that’s been on the Film Festival circuit for a while now, My Mexican Shiva. Friar Yid of Oy-bay saw it at the San Francisco Film Festival 2 years ago and loved it! Check out his review to find out for yourself.
My Mexican Shiva is about an Ashkenazi family in Mexico City who celebrates shiva for its patriarch, who had a Gentile mistress many years younger than him. The family is dysfunctional, almost beyond belief. The deceased has brought together family, friends and former lovers who have side-splitting stories, conflicts and rivalries that are cataloged over the seven-day shiva mourning period. The film is a consistently entertaining and wacky cinematic experience. See the trailer below.
We’re doing a joint event with Hillel at Stanford’s Grad and Young Adult Group, here’s all the details.
