We Lit It Up!

Posted by jewsnextdor on December 14, 2008

Happy Hanukkah!

Happy Hanukkah! Click the image to see the full album from Light It Up!

Light It Up! brought Jewish young adults from around the Bay to the Koret Pavillion last night for a (not-yet) Hanukkah Party. We filled a few barrels with food for Feeding America (formerly Second Harvest Food Bank), DJ-Doff rocked the house, as we tore up the dance floor. Thanks to all of our bartenders who kept the drinks flowing. Thanks as well to all the organizations and volunteers who pitched in to help organize, setup and cleanup the event. We’d love to get your feedback, by either filling out this Word document (save it with your comments) and send it to JewsNextDor[at]gmail.com as an attachement or by submitting this PDF form online to us (just hit the send e-mail button).

Relive the fun, enjoy the memories or see what you missed in the pictures (full album). Facebook has 2 albums (part 1 & part 2) which are selections from the full album on Picasa, as well as an album by Tsafrir Melamed’s Photography. While you’re there join the Jews’ Next Dor Facebook group.

Light It Up! was sponsored by Hillel at Stanford Grad and Young Adult Group, Jews’ Next Dor, SVYAD, Roots Collective, ALS JCC, Tzavta, Israel Center and Hillel of Silicon Valley.

Bone Marrow Donor Drive: Get Tested–It’s Bloodless or Just Help Out

Posted by challahbackgirl on January 6, 2008

Bone Marrow Donor Drive Flyer

CBDYAG is having a 2 part Mitzvah of the Month this month. And for part of it we need Jews 18 to 60 to show up to help make a difference! We invite Jewish 18-60 year olds to come get tested for the worldwide bone marrow registry. See the flyer at right (click to see larger) or read on for more about the drive itself.

CBDYAG Mitzvah of the Month Part 1:
Spread the Word about the Bone Marrow Donor Drive
Sunday, January 13,
11am
Meet at Congregation Beth David, 19700 Prospect Road, Saratoga, Ca.

This month, we’ll be helping out with the super important Bone-Marrow Registration Drive (see below) that various Bay Area Jewish organizations (including CBDYAG) are putting together with the Gift of Life Foundation. The more people who show up at that event, the better. So, we have to get the word out to local Jews by posting fliers at many of their favorite places. For this event, we’ll be posting fliers across town. It’ll be fun– we’ll go in groups and stop at every Jewish-related watering hole we can think of.

CBDYAG Mitzvah of the Month Part 2:
Staffing the Community Bone Marrow Donor Drive

Sunday, January 27
11am-4pm
Gloria and Ken Levy Family Campus, 14855 Oka Road, Los Gatos, CA 95032

Volunteer to take a shift at one of the stations for the testing. We’ll be helping people through of the process to get registered for the worldwide Bone Marrow Registry. It’s easy and we’ll train you with all that you need to know. You just need to let us know you’re willing to help, when in the day is best for you, and how to contact you. Then just show up! Don’t forget to get yourself registered for the registry. All day we’ll have food and board games to schmooze over, as well as a few musical acts. We’re working with Gift of Life Foundation. For more information or to volunteer contact cbdyag[at]gmail.com

Community Bone Marrow Donor Drive

Sunday, January 27
11am-4pm
Gloria and Ken Levy Family Campus, 14855 Oka Road, Los Gatos, CA 95032

Gift of Life Foundation, Hillel of Silicon Valley, AEPi Silicon Valley Chapter, SVYAD, and CBDYAG invite you, and all your Jewish friends 18 to 60, to take the first step in saving a life! Every year many need critical bone marrow transplants to survive. Matching tissue type for a successful transplant is hard, but has a better chance from those of similar ethnicity. Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, North America’s Jewish donor registry is helping you get in the registry to potentially save a life when you stop by the:

Community Bone Marrow Donor Drive
Sunday, January 27, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
Levy Family Campus, 14855 Oka Road, Los Gatos, 95032

Drop by the Levy Family Campus on January 27 between 11am and 4pm to get tested to be entered into the worldwide Bone Marrow Registry made possible by the Gift of Life Foundation. Donors must be 18-60 years of age. Testing is simple, and involves a swab from the inside of the cheeks to collect a sample of DNA. The donor’s tissue type is then entered into the Registry and made available to patients worldwide in need of transplants. It will take about 20 minutes to go through the registration and testing process.

One in 1,000 of the donors in Gift of Life’s registry are called to donate their marrow or blood stem cells each year. Gift of Life is an associate donor registry of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and a participating member of the worldwide registry. The only way you will ever know if you can help save a life is by taking the first step to be tested!

Drop-ins are welcome, but a heads up is appreciated to make sure we have enough testing materials on hand! Contact cbdyag[at]gmail.com

Come to get tested, stay to schmooze. We’ll even have a few short musical acts, board games to entertain you, and of course food!

It may be as little as a few months—or as much as five or even ten years after being tested—before you receive that special call to help save a life. In fact, you may never be called as a suitably matched donor for a patient. The only way you will ever know if you can help save a life is by taking the first step to be tested!
