Donate What You’d be Eating on Yom Kippur: Project Isaiah Food and Clothing Drive

Posted by jewsnextdor on September 1, 2008

Congregation Beth David’s Social Action Committee brings us the return of the Project Isaiah Food and Clothing Drive this High Holy Days. Join CBD for Rosh HaShanah services, and leave with a grocery bag labeled for Project Isaiah (your own bag works too). Bring it back on Kol Nidre/Yom Kippur filled. They are also collecting specific clothing items as well. Food goes to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Here’s all the details on what they are collecting:

FOOD AND CLOTHING COLLECTION

“THIS IS MY CHOSEN FAST… SHARE YOUR BREAD WITH THE HUNGRY. TAKE THE HOMELESS INTO
YOUR HOME. CLOTHE THE NAKED WHEN YOU SEE HIM. DO NOT TURN FROM PEOPLE IN NEED.”
~ Yom Kippur Haftarah, Isaiah

Help us fill barrels with food for Second Harvest

Help us fill barrels with food for Second Harvest

1) Please bring a grocery bag* to services on Kol Nidre filled with nutritious dried or canned food in sealed packages (no glass) such as: infant formula, baby foods, diapers; Canned food: tuna, soups, fruit, beans, vegetables, etc. Packaged foods: pastas, macaroni, rice, beans, cereals-FOODS THAT YOU WOULD ACTUALLY SERVE TO YOUR OWN FAMILY! Please start buying food now and be sure to put thought and heart into your purchases. Also needed are soap,
toothpaste, toothbrushes & floss.

*Bags will be provided during Rosh Hashanah services.

PLEASE DO NOT DONATE ANY PERISHABLE FOODS – no bread or fresh fruit!!

There will be barrels for your full bags from the Food Bank in the Beth David parking lot, or you
may give them to volunteers who will carry the bags for you. The barrels will go directly to the
Second Harvest Food Bank. As a congregation, we can fulfill a mitzvah and make a huge
difference for our neighbors. Last year we collected 3,298 pounds of food. Let’s go for 4,000
this year!

2) In a separate package, on Yom Kippur, please bring: NEW socks and underwear for school-aged children. Also needed are new sweaters/sweatshirts.

3) Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara County provides food to people in need in our community, most of who are families with dependent children or seniors on fixed incomes. This service is about more than sustenance. SHFB delivers dignity and is careful with its resources to help people maintain their health. Second Harvest, and the people served, depends on the generous donations of canned, boxed and bagged food, such as Project Isaiah. Because nutrition also needs to be emphasized, they supplement your food donations with purchases of fruits, vegetables and protein-rich meats. So please consider a financial gift to Second Harvest as a compliment to your gift of food. For every $1 donated, the Food Bank provides 2 well-balanced meals to the community, plus Second Harvest can get more for each dollar received than the consumer, thanks to its many relationships with growers and food suppliers. A gift to Second Harvest extends far beyond the warehouse walls to more than 700 non-profit agencies!
