Bob & Bob Loves a Good Challenge

Posted by challahbackgirl on December 16, 2008

Bob & Bob Books & Judaica store in Los Altos wants to help you with any gifts you may need this holiday season, for Jews or not.

Here’s their plea:

bring us your most difficult

gift challenges

We find few things more fun than finding the perfect gift for someone – and you can find a gift for almost anyone in our store. The recipient might be an active Jew, but we can also find something ideal for your Catholic co-worker or Buddhist manicurist.

Bring us your list and we bet we can find something for everyone on it; if we can’t, Shirley will buy you an ice cream cone.  Here are some of our favorite gift ideas this Hanukkah.

For the foodie on your list, we suggest The Book of New Israeli Food by Janna Gur, $35. With mouthwatering photographs, this cookbook tells more about the extraordinary culture of the State of Israel than a semester course could.

For the spiritual seeker, Everyday Holiness by Alan Morinis, new in paperback for $16.95, offers a contemporary and approachable set of teachings grounded in the traditional Jewish path of Mussar. Anyone who wants to be a better person should read this; we’re surprised Oprah hasn’t featured this book yet.

Everyone knows someone who collects salt and pepper shakers. For them we have a dreidel-shaped set, $14. They will look great on a formally set table or a casual buffet.

Art glass looks great in any setting and Nahariya Glass’s Andreas Meyer is at the top of his field. We have square trays with a variety of color patterns for $125.

For bible study fans, James Kugel’s How to Read the Bible, new in paperback for $18.95, is a must read. A rare combination of modern biblical scholarship and traditional commentary, this can change how one sees sacred scripture.

Joseph Schmidt has a well-earned reputation for creating delicious chocolates. This year, we have a Batik Star of David box of 18 mini-truffles for $24. They’re kosher and just the right size to satisfy a sweet tooth.

Kibitzers and Fools (paperback $6.99) by Simms Taback is a marvelous collection of stories your grandfather would have told if your grandfather came from Eastern Europe and knew how to hold the attention of everyone at the table until they all broke out in huge belly-laughs. Ostensibly a children’s book with amazingly detailed and playful pictures, this is a great gift for anyone who could use a good laugh. And with everything going on in the world, who couldn’t?
These are just a few of our favorite things. We have hundreds more we would be delighted to show you. And don’t forget the ice cream cone challenge.
With best wishes for a stress-free Hanukkah,
Shirley and ellen

P.S. We are still collecting new toys for children five years old and younger for Jewish Family and Children Services to distribute to families in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.  The need is enormous this year. Drop off your contributions by December 15 and we’ll deliver them to JFCS with all the others donated by our customers.  We’ll also be happy to help you make a selection from our own collection of Hanukkah toys, books and games.

  1. Opt –Out of the recession!

What sets a successful individual apart from the majority of the population? Why does only 3% of the world’s population hold 97% of the world’s wealth? Is there a Secret that we don’t know about?

The Good News is that The Secret has been revealed and can be implemented in your life today. You see, success is attainable and is just a matter of improving your mind set by choosing positive instead of following the negative gloom and doom that’s being projected in our world today. Success comes in many forms whether it’s though financial independence, spiritual awareness, physical health or emotional stability. If we will only believe in our Success, we will achieve it. It is possible to change our lives for the better by embracing a new and positive way of thinking.

Let’s talk about cash gifting for instance. The concept of gifting money, giving money, gifting assets or cash leveraging has been in existence and well known by the wealthy for centuries. Private cash gifting is a successful tool that has been handed down from generation to generation in the most affluent circles of society.
