Santa Cruz Jewish Film Festival

The Ninth Annual Santa Cruz Jewish Film Festival invites everyone interested in quality Jewish film to an opening night reception at 6 p.m. this Saturday, February 21 at Temple Beth El of Aptos, 3065 Porter Gulch Road.  The 2007 Academy Award winning film The Counterfeiters will be shown immediately after the reception at 7 p.m.  Admission to individual films is $8 at the door, or $7 in advance.  The Israeli drama, Someone to Run With will play at 9:30 p.m. and is free to teenagers accompanied by an adult.  The film tells the suspenseful story of teen runaways in Jerusalem.

The festival continues on Sunday, February 22 with the joyful and heartwarming Praying With Lior at 2:00 p.m.  The film documents the incredible story of a boy with Downs Syndrome preparing for and achieving his bar mitzvah.  At 3:45 p.m. Operation Mural Casablanca will be shown.  This one plays like a James Bond movie, revealing the thrilling story behind the Mossad operation to receive and immigrate over a hundred Jewish children from Morocco in 1961. Sunday’s presentation concludes with the drama Divided We FallA gentile couple in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia chooses to hide the son of their former Jewish boss, but complications arise.
