Yom HaShoah Community Choir Forming in the Peninsula

For those of you in the Peninsula, thought I’d pass along this announcement:

Announcement from the community-wide Yom HaShoah V’HaGevurah event committee:

NEW SINGING GROUP

Adult and teen singers are needed to create a new chorus that will
perform songs during the community-wide Yom HaShoah commemoration on
Sunday, April 11, 2010.

What’s involved:  Up to ten evening rehearsals during the
winter-spring at a time of the week that is convenient to the majority
of group members.

Also, performance at the Yom HaShoah commemoration on Sunday, April 11, 2010.

What’s required:  The ability to learn the music and words of songs in
various languages (mainly Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian & English) and to
sing them melodically.  Some music will have multiple parts.

What’s Not required:  Ability to sight read, ability to speak the
languages listed above, or the ability to memorize the music.

Where:  Rehearsal location in the Palo Alto or Los Altos area to be announced.

Fee to participate:  No fee.

Yom HaShoah commemoration: This yearly community event features
speakers, music, reading, prayers (Kaddish & El Maleh Rachamim) and
visual exhibits appropriate to the tone of Yom HaShoah V’HaGevurah,
the Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust & Heroism. This event is
sponsored by various Jewish / Israeli organizations and congregations,
including the Israeli Consulate.

Chorus Director:  Karen Koppel Bergen will direct the chorus. She
presently directs the Yiddish Choristers of the ALS JCC and previously
led the Junior Choir at Congregation Beth Am.  She taught children’s
music at the Palo Alto School for Jewish Education for many years.
