Job Opening: Hillel of Silicon Valley Seeks Program Director

Posted by challahbackgirl on September 8, 2011

Hillel of Silicon Valley in San Jose is looking for a Program Director that can connect with college students as a friend and can inspire them on their Jewish paths.  They should be able to juggle multiple responsibilities and help organize and implement Jewish programs.

Here’s the full Job Posting:

The Hillel of Silicon Valley Program Director must be a warm, dynamic, and creative team player who would like to be a key player in our organization. Hillel of Silicon Valley is a community Hillel that serves San Jose State University, Santa Clara University, De Anza College, Foothill College, and West Valley College. Hillel of Silicon Valley just moved into a beautiful new warm and welcoming home. This is a very exiting time for Hillel of Silicon Valley, its students, supporters, and staff.   Hillel of Silicon Valley students are largely commuter working students.

The Program Director works closely with the Assistant Director of Campus Programming to oversee the Hillel programs taking place on the five main campuses and overall Hillel of Silicon Valley programming.  Specific campus and program responsibility will be divided between the Program Director and the Assistant Director of Campus Programming.  The job entails staffing events and meetings which take can place at night and weekends as well.  Must be willing to respond to students via phone calls, text messages, emails, and Facebook messages in a timely manner -sometimes just to chat, and often to follow up on some task or detail for a program.  The Program Director must have excellent administrative skills, and also be approachable, personable, and sensitive.  Informal or formal Jewish education background is highly desirable since the Program Director is a Jewish role model for the students. The Program Director will work together with a wide variety of students, guiding them and encouraging them as they create programs, workshops, discussion groups, outdoor adventures, retreats, religious services, and more.  A fundamental requirement is the ability to “empower” students with real responsibility.  It is tremendously meaningful and satisfying work.

Hillel of Silicon Valley students are largely commuting, working students.  They enjoy the sense of community at Hillel but are not necessarily seeking it out when they arrive on campus.  For many students, Hillel is their first brush with the organized Jewish community and they tend to identify as more culturally than religiously Jewish.

Responsibilities include:

  • Recruit and develop student leaders
  • Develop training programs for student leaders (both formal and informal)
  • Advise individual campus Jewish Student Group boards (regular meetings and student program planning)

  • Help plan, staff, organize, and recruit for overall Hillel of Silicon Valley programs and initiatives (including but not limited to Shabbat dinners, Jewish Holiday celebrations, Alternative Sundays (our social action program), cooking classes, Jewish learning etc
  • Will oversee student fundraising activities including two phon-a-thons and two restaurant fundraisers.

  • Coordinate campus and community publicity, including flyers, newspaper articles, calendars, brochures, e-mails, Facebook events, and web-site.
  • Keep track of social media trends and adapt to students’ needs
  • Create the weekly newsletter and send using Constant Contact.

  • Responsible for program budget.
  • Maintain records for student information, programs and attendance.
  • Make sure campus advisers are informed and included in Jewish Student Groups activities, status, etc
  • Make sure that assigned Jewish student groups are properly registered at their campus and in full compliance with school requirements.

  • Provide logistical support for assigned programs: set up and clean up for Shabbat dinners, events at the House, etc
  • Recruit students for Hillel main fundraising event of the year (Pillars of the Community) and provide support to committee members
