Welcome Oyster!

Posted by challahbackgirl on March 28, 2007

OysterCBDYAG is honored to have Oyster, founder and editor-in-chief of Oy Bay, join our blogging crew. As his own blog describes him, “He has lived in the Bay Area his entire life, and has always been active in the Jewish community. In high school he was the regional vice-president for cultural, religious, and Zionist programming for BBYO, and in college at UC Berkeley was for a time the chair of the Israel Action Committee. He helped start the Jewish Students For Peace pro-Israel Zionist student network during the worst times of the second intifada.” Oyster has been an active member of CBDYAG for the past few years and you can often spot him at CBD on Shabbat mornings. He’d love for you to join his hevruta and study a little Torah with him after Kiddush.

Personalize Your Passover

Posted by challahbackgirl on March 25, 2007

seder tableA conversation at Shul Saturday morning with Oyster and others got me thinking. Every year we gather ’round the table and go through the Passover seder. Seder means order, and while the order is the same, every year is a little different. It not just different people, or food, but each year something different in the seder resonates with me, or others at the table.

Whether you’re hosting a seder or a guest at another table you should make the seder meaning full for you. Here are just a few things out there to aid in your personalizing your passover experience. I’d love to hear about your Passover experience and your favorite passover foods.

I tried to put these resources into categories, in no particular order, but some entries belong in more then one category.

Hametz Collection – A Double Mitzvah!

Posted by challahbackgirl on March 24, 2007

“HaLachma Anya, di achalu avahatana b’ar’a d’mitzrayim. This is the bread of affliction our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt. Let all who are hungry come and eat; let all who are in need come share our Passover”–Passover HaggadahGrocery Bag

Congregation Beth David is here to help! Are you cleaning your pantries for Passover? Bring your unopened nonperishable Hametz items to Beth David by Friday, March 30 for donation to the 2nd Harvest Food Bank! A double mitzvah – ridding your home of hametz and providing food for the hungry!

For any hametz crumbs or otherwise left in your home, don’t forget to “sell” it (temporarily transfer ownership).

Editors note: CBD has a barrel in the lobby year round for donations to 2nd Harvest Food Bank.

Kosher for Passover Food at an Albertsons Near You!

Posted by challahbackgirl on March 18, 2007

Albertsons Community

Are you wondering what you’ll eat for 8 days of Passover like me? Feeling the bread of affliction (Matzah) blues? No worries, eating kosher for Passover doesn’t have to be a modern day plague. Albertsons and Congregation Beth David (CBD) are teaming up to make sure you and I will have plenty of tasty kosher things to eat.

The Albertsons at El Paseo de Saratoga placed a large kosher fresh meat and dairy order to arrive in the store on Monday or Tuesday, March 19 & 20 to tickle our taste buds. They also ordered other kosher for Passover treats. They deserve a big Todah Rabah.

Along with this great news CBD brings us the 3rd annual Passover in the Aisles. Look for their volunteers in two Albertsons locations: Los Altos and El Paseo de Saratoga. Stop by and say hello as they hand out goodies and bring the joy of Passover your way. They’re also having a prize giveaway, so be sure to enter the raffle! You can find them at both locations on Sunday, March 25, between 12:30–6:30 as well as Thursday, March 29, between 3:00–7:00 pm

This is a great step for the South Bay Jewish community who has been advocating for Kosher food for years. To learn more about kosher for Passover foods visit the OU site.

Don’t forget to sell your Chametz. You can pick up a form at CBD or through OU online.
