Israel in the Gardens and After Party

Posted by challahbackgirl on May 27, 2007

If you’ve been raised in the Oy-Bay Area you’re sure to know of the big community wide Birthday Bash for Israel–Israel in the Gardens. And you’re sure to find me there again this year. Check out the J. Weekly’s Official guide to Israel in the Gardens 2007, there’s so much going on this post doesn’t even touch the surface! According to their online headquarters:

Rite to Perform at Israel in the Gardens, SF 2007

More than 15,000 people unite once a year to rejoice and commemorate Israel’s Independence. It’s an opportunity to show our solidarity and publicly recognize members in our community for their extraordinary commitment to Israel and their efforts in strengthening Israel – Bay Area relations.

This year we’re going green:
We are particularly excited that this year’s theme emphasizes a matter universally resonant with Americans, Jews and Israelis – “Green.” In our traditional values to repair the world (tikkun olam), we invite you and organizations to join in our energy conservation efforts. There will be informational booths highlighting the alternative energy plans of US and Israeli companies and a walk-a-thon, “Walk-a-mile for Israel,” to help sponsor global environmental preservation work.

Yerba Buena Gardens, SF is the place to be on Sunday, June 3rd. It’s a FREE (thanks to many sponsors) festival for all ages, live performances all day on the main stage, including a headline performance by Israeli singer Rita, theater shows, tables of community, dance contest for teens, crafts for kids, freshly made ethnic foods (these have a charge); mini film festival and shop for everything from jewelry to handmade clothing from dozens of local artisan craft booths. Not to mention seeing all your friends you’ll be running into all day.

For us Young Adults the festivities continue with an After Party on the 4th floor of the Metreon–what a view. Thanks to Tzavta, the Young Adults Club of the Israel Center for hosting this party each year. Here’s the details:

Isreal in the Gardens After Party

Everyone (21 & up!) is invited so bring your good vibe to the evenings biggest after party!

Time: immediately following Rita’s performance until 10:00 p.m.
Location: 4th floor, the Metreon
Featuring: World class DJ’s spinning the latest beats and international mix
Admission: $10

After every good party, there’s always an after party, and it’s where everybody who’s anybody gets their groove on. Our young adults club, Tzavta, invites you to hangout, dance, and for those of you who are a little mellower, chill and schmooze at our ultra cool venue. Within steps from the festival, it just makes sense to have the festivities continue with delicious food, drinks, and of course, hip music beats.

Join us for:

* A raffle with creative prizes
* Complimentary food, liquor & beverages
* Amazing views from the metreon’s balcony
* Dancing and live Israeli/world music with DJ UV

Got Torah?

Posted by Oyster on May 24, 2007

Torah Study

What: Young Adult Torah Study
When: Saturday, May 26th, ~1:30 PM
Where: Congregation Beth David

Informally for a few months now, me and my chevruta have been studying Torah after services at my shul. We usually focus on the weekly Torah portion, and sometimes we mix in readings for special occasions (like ‘The Book of Ruth‘). We encourage our friends to join us, and we do a mix of chevruta study (in pairs) and group discussion.

So why study Torah? Many more brilliant minds than I have given excellent reasons, but here goes: It deepens your understanding of the Jewish people. It’s your intellectual heritage. It sharpens your reasoning and arguing skills. It’s social. As David Ben-Gurion said, “For thousands of years, we have guarded the Torah, and for thousands of years, the Torah has guarded us.” Nuff said.

All are invited to come and join us. We do this every Shabbat, but we’re now extending an invitation to the wider young adult Jewish community to join in. We’re gonna hold it once a month with a guest instructor ( a rabbi, scholar, or other learned Jew ) and invite everyone to come. If you are hard-core, you can join us every week. 🙂

Are You Ready For Some Frisbee?

Posted by ishtov on May 24, 2007

Ultimate FrisbeeMark your calendars and stock up on Powerade and sunscreen. Sunday June 10th at 4PM we’ll be playing ultimate Frisbee at the Sunnyvale Middle School Park. We might play some basketball too if there is enough interest.

For people that are unfamiliar with the sport, Ultimate Frisbee is a lot like football, except you play it with a frisbee, and instead of tackling and downs, possession changes when a team throws an incomplete pass. You can’t run with the frisbee. (I think you’re limited to two steps after catching a pass, sort of like basketball.) And I believe the defensive team can intercept or knock down passes to cause a change of possession. You score a point when your team catches a pass in the end zone.

In any case, this is shaping up to be the premiere Jewish young adult sporting of event of the summer of 2007 in the Silicon Valley / Bay Area border region area. So don’t miss it.

Sunnyvale Middle School Park is located between Knickerbocker, Mary, and Remington. Look for us between the track and the baseball field.

Recap: CBDYAG’s Bowling Nite

Posted by challahbackgirl on May 22, 2007

Jewish Young Adult Bowling Nite While the evening started a little slow, things sure heated up fast at CBDYAG’s Bowling Nite. The schmooze was on all night, with a few CBDYAG newbies and an eclectic mix of our regulars. We overflowed our 3 lanes (we really could have used a 4th or 5th lane even). Our bowling skills warmed up as the night went on and a few of us stayed to close the alley. While we didn’t let the gutter get lonely, we did manage to have 1 Turkey during the evening. I’ll spare you the play by play, but you can check out pictures from the camera’s of DKO and ChallahBackGirl.

CBDYAG gives a big thanks to Mr. P.C for organizing this great night of fun, and to everyone who came out and really made the evening.

We hope to see you at a future event.

Alan Dershowitz: Enemy of Israel?

Posted by ishtov on May 20, 2007

Last Sunday Alan Dershowitz spoke at Stanford on the Arab / Israeli conflict. He opened his talk by stating, “I’m pro-Palestinian. And I’m pro-Israel.” Well he got the first part right at least.

While he does a great job of exposing the inaccuracy of anti-Israel propaganda, for example he points out that Human Rights Watch blames Palestinian honor killings (where a Palestinian woman is raped and then killed by her own family to protect the family’s honor) on Israeli occupation instead of on Palestinian culture as an example of the anti-Israel agenda of many so called human rights organizations; his idea for Israel to give in on virtually every issue in a future peace settlement and his failure in his role in United Nations resolution 242 make his reputation as strong advocate for Israel to be very disputable.

Alan Dershowitz’s plan for peace is for Israel to withdraw to the 1967 borders (with some minor land Read the rest of this entry »

Izzy’s Deli Bringing the Community Together

Posted by challahbackgirl on May 13, 2007

Sunnyvale Kosher DeliCross-posted to Oy-Bay.org

The new Izzy’s Brooklyn Deli is officially opened and is a very vibrant place drawing a cross section of the Bay Area Jewish Community. It started with L’Chaim on Tuesday night, and opened Wednesday with their full menu of breakfast, lunch, dinner, takeout, and catering services. It’s a Glatt Kosher (under the supervison of Vaad HaKashrus of Northern California) mix of Deli, Israeli and Yeminite cuisine made with lots of love, as they bill themselves it’s “Authentic ‘Grandma’ Food.”

The staff is still on a learning curve so you can expect to wait to order and again for your food, especially during the lunch time rush, but each day brings changes. Day one they rushed to get everything ready, but their Chicken Soup didn’t get it’s Matzah Balls. Printed receipts became available on Day 2 and coming soon are bigger square tables to replace the small round ones. They have barrowed umbrellas to shade their outdoor table from their Dairy counter part Izzy’s Brooklyn Bagels. As Oy-Bay reported both are Read the rest of this entry »
